The Andrews Labor Government is helping put on fun, educational – and free – events this October for Warrnambool families and children as part of Children’s Week.
Labor Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney today announced Warrnambool will host two events for Children’s Week, including the Warrnambool Toy Library Inc’s Messy Play Day on Saturday 22 October and Corroboree Kids at the Warrnambool Art Gallery from Sunday 23 October through to Saturday 28 October
The two organisation were among the 69 recipients of a Children’s Week grant.
The grants ranging from $500 to $1300 will be provided to not-for-profit organisations and councils to host free and fun activities for families as part of Children’s Week, which runs from 21-29 October.
Held on the Warrnambool Civic Green, Messy Play Day will include play-based educational and fun activities for children of all abilities from ages 0 to 10.
To support the Children’s Week theme ‘Education has the power to transform children’s lives’, Warrnambool Art Gallery (WAG) will collaborate with Gunditjmara, with song man and Elder, Brett Clarke, to present an Indigenous Australian-inspired music and rhythm session for learners in the Early Years (Kinder – Year 2, Ages 4 – 8).
Children will explore different indigenous instruments and artefacts from WAG’s Collection, move to different sounds, and join in a sing-a-long to an Indigenous song. Children also explore indigenous symbols, specifically those relating to land, water and people, which signify ‘holistic and integrated approaches based on connections to Clan and Country’. Children have the opportunity to assemble and decorate their own indigenous-inspired rain stick that they can use while singing and take home afterwards.
Children’s Week events are free for families with children aged 0-12 years and are a great opportunity for families to enjoy a fun, engaging and educational experience.
The Government is delivering its $202.1 million Education State Early Childhood Reform Plan, which recognises the importance of providing families with strong support in early childhood so our kids are ready for kinder, ready for school and ready for life.
