Sporting enthusiasts of all ages in the Western Victoria town of Koroit will again be taking the court in their newly-refurbished stadium.
The Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney MP, today officially opened the Victoria Park Stadium on behalf of the Sport and Recreation Minister, James Merlino.
Ms Tierney said the project will cater for the growing interest in many sports, including basketball and netball.
“The best news about this project is that it will benefit not only those who are taking part in various sporting activities, but also caters to spectators and provides much-needed upgrades for storage and public meeting facilities,” Ms Tierney said.
Indeed, while the project’s primary aim was to convert the undersized basketball/netball facility into a full-sized court, other work included upgrading the court’s playing surface, refurbishing player change rooms for indoor and outdoor sports, and adding a new entrance, office area and kiosk.
Moyne Shire Council also contributed more than $1.1 million and local community groups raised over $100,000 for the project as well as $500,000 from the Victorian Government’s Community Facility Funding Program.
“Today’s opening is a fantastic result and is a great example of what can be achieved by the Victorian Government, sporting associations, local councils and communities working together,” she said.
“Our local sport and recreation facilities are vital to the social wellbeing of communities like Koroit and by improving the quality of these facilities, we’re encouraging greater participation for people of all ages and interests,” Ms Tierney said.
