An innovative early childhood program in Warrnambool helping local kids get a better start in life is being recognised as among Victoria’s best.
Labor Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney announced Nurturing Room Bridges Home to School is one of 15 Victorian Early Years Awards 2017 finalists recognised today for their outstanding contribution to early childhood.
Run by Warrnambool East Primary School, Nurturing Room Bridges Home to School is being recognised in the Promoting Children’s Health and Wellbeing category for its inspiring work with our children.
Warrnambool East Primary School created a nurturing room in response to the number of students it had enrolled who were vulnerable after experiencing trauma such as domestic violence, family bereavement, serious family illness, abuse or neglect.
The nurturing room helps foster a positive start to each day and builds relationships with adult mentors.
In addition to daily check-ins for wellbeing and health, the program includes sensory activities, mindfulness, play-based learning, oral language and links to literacy and numeracy.
The Victorian Early Years Awards recognise the vital work early childhood professionals do to make a difference to the lives of Victorian children and families.
Now in their 12th year, the awards celebrate the achievements and commitment of early childhood professionals across five award categories, including those promoting children’s health and wellbeing, supporting parents, creating collaborative community partnerships, and improving access to early learning.
Winners will be announced later this year and are in line to receive between $10,000 and $15,000 to go towards enhancing their work.
