The Victorian Government has committed $1 million for Sustainability Victoria to deliver the Victorian Litter Plan, which includes litter grants and programs for local councils and the community to reduce litter in the State.
Labor Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney has welcomed the grants saying the Victorian Government is taking action to tackle litter and we are now seeing positive results.
Ms Tierney said one of the key projects funded in the package is the Litter and Illegal Dumping Grants program, which targets littering in retail areas and illegal dumping in green spaces.
The program recently announced $130,000 worth of projects to six local Councils.
The funded projects include cameras to catch illegal dumping, as well as education campaigns to help communities take action to reduce both littering and illegal dumping.
Ms Tierney today congratulated the Corangamite Shire Council for its grant, saying the $10,000 grant will allow Lismore to contribute to Victoria’s ongoing excellent record for reducing litter, through the Lismore – Street Litter Clean up Project.
The Council project will involve the trial use of two compactable litter bins in Lismore. The litter bin enclosure will allow council to undertake a community education campaign through messaging on the exterior enclosure.
