Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney met with local “shedders” and officially opened the new Men’s Shed located at the Colac Showgrounds.
Previously, the Colac Men’s Shed operated from a shared site at Skills’ Connection Inc., a disability service provider on Pound Road. It relocated after receiving funding through the 2015-2016 Men’s Shed funding round.
The new larger shed will cater to the growing number of Colac men who want to join the Men’s Shed group, with a number of exciting projects scheduled now the new shed is completed.
The Colac Men’s Shed was formed in 2005 and currently has 35 members, operating two days per week. It provides an opportunity for men to work on common projects such as woodwork, car restoration and community projects.
The Pastoral & Agricultural Society supported the construction of the Colac Men’s Shed.
There are more than 350 men’s sheds already operating across Victoria, where men can participate locally and interact in a safe and inclusive environment.
Importantly, the sheds also provide community support especially during periods of economic and social change.
The Andrews Government recently announced a new round of funding which will provide $879,000 in 2017-18 for the construction and refurbishment of men’s sheds.
Grants of up to $60,000 are available for communities to build a new shed, or up to $30,000 to refurbish an existing one.
