Road safety for motorists and pedestrians at the Colac-Lavers Hill Road and Hoveys Road intersection will be improved as part of a new round of road safety funding, Member for Western Victoria, Gayle Tierney announced today.
Ms Tierney said the $315,000 project included realignment to convert Y to T intersection including delineation, widen shoulder to provide right turn bypass and left turn lane into Hoveys Road and remove trees to improve sight distance.
“This location has been identified as a road safety risk and the upgrade will significantly reduce that risk,” Ms Tierney said.
“Over $7 million will be invested in 33 projects to improve road safety at outer metropolitan and rural road intersections.”
The funding is part of the $15 million Greyspot program, funded by the Transport Accident Commission.
“The Greyspot program specifically targets outer metropolitan and rural intersections which do not meet traditional crash-based blackspot criteria,” Ms Tierney said.
“Under the Greyspot Program, we are addressing intersections that may not have had recognised crash histories.
“We are targeting intersections before accidents happen.
“Earlier this year, we announced the first 33 projects of the program. We are now announcing the remaining 33 projects.”
Ms Tierney said the Government had assessed the layout of the road, speed limits, traffic volumes, and the estimated cost of proposed treatments at each of the sites.
“Much of the Greyspot program targets places where either the visibility or design of the intersection can be improved.”
Minister for Roads and Ports, Tim Pallas said that the Greyspot program was vital to further improving road safety in Victoria.
“Over the past four years, Victoria has recorded its four lowest road tolls since records began,” Mr Pallas said.
“Victoria leads the nation in reducing road trauma and we want to continue to improve road safety for all Victorians.
“The funding is part of the larger $597 million commitment to improve road safety infrastructure made in the Meeting Our Transport Challenges plan.”
